Discover Authentic Chawan Tea Culture With This Handcrafted Black Clay Bowl

This hand-thrown black clay Japanese chawan is the perfect personal tea bowl for enjoying all types of tea, from matcha and green tea to oolong and pu-erh. Blending traditional Asian pottery techniques with modern minimalist design, this chawan brings a sense of calm ritual to your daily tea time.

What Makes This Japanese Chawan Unique

Handcrafted from high-fired black coarse clay, this chawan features a deep matte black finish with subtle natural texture that feels warm and comfortable in your hand. The deep black color beautifully contrasts with the color of your tea, making every sip a visual as well as sensory pleasure.

We offer two distinct hand-finished styles to match your taste and brewing preference:

Style A (3oz / 90ml): A softly rounded, full-bodied chawan with smooth, matte textured clay. The gently curved, slightly narrow rim helps trap tea aroma for a more intense sensory experience, while the rounded shape fits perfectly in the palm for a comfortable hold. Dimensions: 2.9″ x 3.9″ x 1.7″ (7.3cm x 9.8cm x 4.2cm)
Style B (3.4oz / 100ml): A classic traditional bamboo hat (douli) shaped chawan with subtle vertical texture lines across the body. The wide open rim lets tea aromas fully bloom, making it ideal for enjoying delicate green teas and white teas where aroma and color appreciation are key. The textured lines also improve grip and add visual interest. Dimensions: 2.9″ x 3.9″ x 1.8″ (7.3cm x 9.8cm x 4.6cm)

Care & Use for Your Japanese Chawan

This chawan is designed for daily use: it’s microwave and dishwasher safe, though we recommend hand washing to preserve the natural clay texture over time. The porous coarse clay helps maintain a steady tea temperature, keeping your brew warm longer during slow sipping sessions.

Whether you’re building a traditional tea set for your home, looking for a unique gift for a tea lover, or want to add a touch of minimalist Asian aesthetic to your coffee table, this black clay Japanese chawan is a timeless, functional piece that will bring years of enjoyment.
